With the help of Toyota and CREATE, teachers in Lee, Pontotoc and Union counties will be able to extend career readiness to their elementary school classrooms in the upcoming school year through activities, field trips and career-themed units. While that may seem early for students to be thinking about potential careers, Stone said even young students are interested. Kids as early as that are inquisitive about work and working, Stone said. The key to this, however, is developmentally appropriate introductions to careers and workplaces. CREATE has set aside $200,000 of Toyota Wellspring grant money to be divided throughout the eight school districts in those counties. Support for career education is coming from the state level, too. In Mississippi, all eighth grade students use a computer program to explore career pathways. Eighth graders also are required to work with guidance counselors to create a graduation plan based on a particular career path that may interest them. That plan then guides their academic choices in high school. This year, the MDE is working with several Northeast Mississippi schools on its first major career readiness initiative. The initiative will provide software to schools to help students with ACT prep, job-readiness assessment prep, soft skills training and career exploration.
